Bitterly cold temperatures were not going to stop me from seeing this year's christmas train. Every year I manage to miss it, so this year I was ready. Dispite the near below 40 weather (with the windchill of course), I stayed to watch the show, then waited to get a shot of the train departing...
CN 15016, Everybody's favorite rebuilt RDC inspection car, came to Riverview. While in the area the RDC was coincidentally assigned to cover the route of VIA 680, the oldtime RDC sevice from Regina to Prince Albert, making trips over the Warman, Watrous and Craik Subdivisions in proper fashion.
CN 5684 and SD70M-2 lead a grain train at Saskatoons Diefenbaker park. Photo was taken in Saskatoon Saskatchewan on the Watrous Subdivision.
Nice crew gave me a series of honks as she went by.
The tracks are only used by one train now - Saskatoon-Kindersly turn 541. CN 563 runs once in a while to serve the Conquest & Elrose subs.
CN 513/4 to White Bear & Kyle still ran when this picture was taken, both subdivisions are gone now.
CN 114/5 no longer utilize this route either...
Food prices are far more reasonable, but at what expense? This economic crisis is starting to get to the railway...I'm used to seeing trains with more than 45 cars!
"Ex-Con" C40-8W 2455 is the trailing unit.
The amount or RR junk: rails/ties/etc. trackside never fails to amaze me. Why does no one care? You can see the railhead of CPs Sutherland sub at the very top of the photo. These weeds are only 100ft away from a major street likely leftovers of this landscaping exercise: http://tinyurl.com/yqynut
Ex-Southern & Burlington Northern (both fallen flags) coal hoppers roll under CNs banner. Theres also a large chunk of ex-CP ones in the fleet on unit trains.
Note the bent structure on the CNA (ex-SOU) hopper.
This is not Halloween, but CNs caboose fleet will scare you any day do you still want to ride? This rider car is leading the 630 tramp back to the yard, with a GP38-2W pushing on the other end.
Interestingly you can still see where the CN decal used to be in the middle. Why did CN patch...

Except for the SD50F, Dash 8-40CM & GP40-2LW, all of whom have fallen out of favour, nearly 35 years of CN mainline units are present...
CN 1405 was working North Saskatoon solo when he died, so the 630 tramp that had been working Nutana (MP188 Watrous sub) earlier, was sent to the rescue running light. He then brought in 1405s train running in reverse with the caboose leading.
Hopefully this isnt 1405s last ride, as CN doesnt...
