San Francisco Belt Railroad #23

San Francisco Belt Railroad #23

Unbeknown to most people, San Francisco has a small terminal switching operation out of one of its piers. The San Francisco Belt used to switch piers all up and down the Embarcadero waterfront district, but today its primary operation is switching the "dirty dirt" waste transloading facility and a tallow company on Pier 96. They continue to operate the same two Alco S-2's that they've had since 1946, and recently repainted them. They even run them on biodiesel. Here #23 is shown running down the Darling International lead after spotting a few empties at their tallow plant.
