CB&Q FT #110D, Naperville, IL, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is a scan of one of the first color photos I ever shot as I was making the transition from black & white to color, and this is a color negative, I finally settled on color slide film, so I did not take good care of this negative film. I'm still cleaning it up. This is a developing story, my internet connection is becoming spotty, so I thought I better upload this image, even though it is not done. I intend to replace this image with a better version, but my connection to the internet if faulty, so I probably have to change ISP's, what a pain.
This location is generally referred to as Naperville Curve, this is about a half mile to the East of the passenger station at Naperville, and most trains were in Run 8 between Lisle (a few miles behind this train) and Naperville.
According to F. Hol Wagner, editor of Burilington Bulletiin #4, publication of the Burlington Route Historical Society, this locomotive was completed in June 1944 as the trailing cab unit of FT set #110 (c/n 2129). Unit #110D was traded in to EMD as credit for a GP-35 during April 1964, a 20 year life, thank goodness we're not all measured in locomotive years. The suffix letters were not added unit the units were broken up in the 1950's. Typically, the FT's were delivered in A-B-B-A sets, and after agreements were reached were reached with the Brotherhoods, the locomotives were broken up into A-B sets.
As I understand it, the A unit could not be run alone, because the batteries were in the B unit, I might have info specific to a single railroad about the batteries, I don't know for sure. Anyway, the #110D is seen here with an FT B unit and what is either a late model F-3 or a F-7 trailing, producing approximately 4200 horsepower for this train.
Every CB&Q train in and out of Chicago passed by on these three tracks in Naperville, which included several Zephyrs, a few scheduled time freights, some extra drag freights, one way freight, and at least 5-6 dozen Dinkys (commuter trains).
