I've never been to Dartmouth, however here's a picture of it, taken from the other side of the bay, the Halifax waterfront. Two CN SD75I's have come off the Gypsum train and are waiting in the yard. Although it is hard to see, a 47xx series GP38-2 is hiding behind them, with a load of autoracks...
If I drive 20 minutes on my bike outside of town, this is the closest CN spot I can reach. I don't like it very much as its far from home, trains go fast doing 60miles/hour and it doesn't help that it's a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. That's why I chose to railfan CP instead on a regular...
But these 2 SD75is are actuallu going really slow. Infact, the end of the train even came to a stop on the bridge! No doubt he was receiving a crew change in the yard. CN 5732 and 5726 head up an intermodal. The train also contained a "Long Runner" set.
The headlights on CN 5736 shine brightly as it readies it's self to cross the South Saskatchewan river. The SD75i was trailed by a C40-8M. But alas, I didn't get the number.
Putting the older powere ahead of the brand-new. 5630 smokes its way eastbound with ES44DC 2239 and SD40-2 5372. The train bescide it is an eastbound with 5541 and 2446 on the point. That train would still be coasting too a stop.
CN 5734 leads a heavy potash train bound for eastern ports thru Newtonville Ontario. The engineer had the units notched out, evident by the heavy heat exhaust thanks to the cold temperatures. The detector clocked him at a blistering 25mph.
You can tell which one is which by the wing. While the Dash 9-44CW & SD75I and vice versa lash-up are very common on CN, it's not easy to zoom in and get this shot. You can see the minor GE/EMD differences by looking at the two 4000 h.p. beasts.
On one of my first visits to Portage JCT (I visit that place about once/twice a week) I was lucky enough to catch a great traffic jam. I've seen bottlenecks since, but this one is by far the best. Let's break it down:
In the foreground, E/B CN local with CN 1435 & 7220 (GMD1u & GP9RM)...
