I recently saw a photo that shows the aftermath of a boiler explosion, and the engine sure looked like a C&O Kanawha to me. The smokebox front is gone and the tubes are splayed radiating out, as far as 10-15 feet, in all kinds of angles from the front. I saw no mid-course or firebox damages from the angle of the photo but the stack and metal between it and the smokebox front appeared to be gone. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I am doing genealogywork on my norwegian-american family.
My granduncle immigrated to America in 1902.
An old letter tells us his story about how he got alle the way from Norway to Thompson, IA.
I am working on writing a family book, and I try to find out all the details about his travel with the railroad.
The information I have is the following:
Sept 8th 1902, Monday: Left New York by train 11 PM.
Sept 9th 1902, Tuesday: Arrived Buffalo,NY, at 12 noon. Changed train for Chicago...

I was wondering if someone could tell me which diesel locomotive models are some of the oldest continously serving to see regular duty even in today's railroad environment? And which railroads seems to have a lot of them?
