Back in the day this was GE's most popular 6-axle, offered in direct competition to EMD's SD40-2, making him a direct predecessor to todays GEVO. 600 units were made vs. 4,000 40s. Interstingly both UP & BN bought up a bulk of them, 150 vs. 686 & 180 vs. 779 respectively. UP sold/scrapped their fleet by the late 1980s while the SD40-2s are still rolling strong!
