At the intersection of 3rd St. and Carroll, there is a diamond between a MUNI light rail line and a spur served by the UP. There is another similar diamond farther up 3rd St. These may be the last such interlockings in the country where a "steam" road crosses a "trolley" line.
Nice Location
here is the other location on third.
Apparently there used to be two more such diamonds, @ Illinois/25th & Illinois/Cesar Chavez. Now the RR tracks have been removed at the diamond, leaving long sections of inaccessible trackage!
There were never any diamonds. The tracks on Illinois have been out of service since SP closed the Mission Bay yard, except for a short stretch near Islais Creek, which is used for switching moves by SF Belt. When MUNI built their new maintenance facility in Mission Bay, they cut the tracks and never put in a diamond.
