ConRail ballast train BAL-139 comes off the west end of the Alfred E. Smith Memorial bridge on July 23, 1988. As part of the Castleton Cutoff, it opened in Nov. 1924 to allow freight traffic to and from the Boston & Albany, the NYC Hudson River and West Shore lines to avoid the congestion in Albany and to gain access to the new Selkirk yard.
The parallel bridge is the New York State Thruway extension which connects the Mass Turnpike (I-90) with the New York State thruway (I-87) near Albany.
