Glacier Green at Hillyard

Hillyard in Spokane Wa. was Great Northern's main Steam & Diesel shop in the West. After the BN merger in 1972 the new Company decided to use Northern Pacific's Parkwater facility in Spokane as their repair facility and Hillyard became redundant. A few years after this picture was taken everything but the water tower was leveled.
Part of the reason for switching to the NP facilities was because they removed some of the GN mainline for Expo 74. I really like the old tender behind the box car.

I enjoy fallen flags as they had real charisma in them. Somewhere along the line they had a bad accountant who did not do the numbers right. My guess of course.
I do wonder why companies level things instead of keeping them. I figure once its built, maintaining is a frction of the cost to build something new
