In theory, CN's Craik sub should be one of the busiest in the province, being the main link between Saskatoon and Regina, the two largest cities. Furthermore it forms a much longer North/South line, connecting Prince Albert to the US. Border (365.2 miles). It is so strait, that the main North/South HWY simply runs next to it. Here-in lies the problem.
The US. border-Saskatoon portion will soon be torn up (Craik+Lewvan subs), while most of the line to Prince Albert has been sold to a shortline, CTRW. CN wants to keep the Saskatoon-Davidson portion of the Craik sub, where a wayfreight runs to a grain terminal.
Then there's this piece on the other end. About a mile in Regina, used as storage for about a dozen hoppers and ~40 '89 flats. Sadly today these are the only cars left on the line (Davidson was empty) - no worries about blocking the mainline, a train hasn't run between Regina and Saskatoon since 2002.
Ironically CP's line between th two cities, which is not strait at all (176 vs. 154 miles), sees a fair amout of traffic (~3 trains per day), including this IMS wayfreight:

and US bound unit potash trains. Now why coudn't CN run such traffic? CN still handles Intermodal between the two cities, via the HWY.
