On Friday, June 23, 2006, The National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH) hosted a tour and night photography session within the former Bethlehem Steel mill in Bethlehem, PA.
The cars on the bridge are 710.5 broad gauge transfer cars. They transferred iron ore from the ore yard to the blast furnaces. The cars were electric powered, utilizing trolley poles. Each car is 37 feet, 8 inches long, 16 feet wide and has a capacity of 90 tons. They were built in the plant between 1935 and 1960. The cars were last used in 1995 when iron production ended. More information and blueprints are available on the Blast Furnace Complex CD sold by the National Museum of Industrial History. It costs $12.60 including tax and shipping and handling. Checks (no cash please) can be mailed and made payable to: National Museum of Industrial History 530 East Third Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015
