White Pass & Yukon receives second new locomotive

The White Pass & Yukon has received the second in its order of 10 new locomotives. National Railway Equipment E3000CC-DC No. 3001 arrived in Skagway, Alaska, by ship on Monday and was offloaded and moved to the railroad’s shops. The 3,300-hp locomotive, with an EMD 645 prime mover, joins No. 3002, which arrived in March. Narrow gauge diesels being something other than an off-the-shelf product, the railroad coordinated with and tacked its order onto an order being built for Australia....

They are, and I sure hope they're preserved.

Meanwhile, due to COVID WP&Y has apparently just acquired another shiny new yellow and green paperweight. Damn expensive one too.

They appear to be offering limited service. It did indicate that the White Pass Summit Excursion could be booked on certain dates starting in July. There may be other options too, I'm not sure.

With massive cruise ship cancellations, it's going to be a tough season for them.

The cancellations noted below make sense. As much as I love steam, it's expensive and demanding. Only going to the summit rather than Carcroos avoids going into Canada, making things much easier there. I'm not familiar with the bus trips, so can't comment on that one.

OPERATIONAL UPDATES
The White Pass & Yukon Route railroad remains committed to providing excursions in a safe and healthy manner for all passengers and staff. The railroad has been closely following federal, state and territorial health mandates to determine the right course of action to take regarding our 2020 operating season. We are planning to restart operations as soon as it is safe and practicable to do so. Keeping our highest priority focused on health and our company’s well-being, we are making the difficult decision to suspend the following train routes for the 2020 season:

  • Fraser Meadows Steam Excursion – All excursion offerings suspended for the 2020 season
  • Whitehorse to Skagway Bus Excursions – All excursion offerings suspended for the 2020 season
  • Skagway to Carcross Excursions – Excursion offerings suspended for the 2020 season
An announcement will be made regarding Chilkoot Hiker Service in the coming weeks.
