UP Shuts Down Cold Connect

Union Pacific on May 8, 2020 shut down its Cold Connect service for perishables traffic from the West Coast to the East Coast. Cold Connect began in January 2017 with the acquisition from Railex of three cold storage and distribution facilities in Delano, Calif.; Wallula, Wash.; and Rotterdam, N.Y.

It may well be the operation was on life support, and UP pulled the plug during this downturn.

That's possible. It only started in 2017, so maybe it just didn't work out quite like they hoped it would. The economy shouldn't have much effect on this anyway, as food shipments should still be moving.

You are correct. No matter what the economy does, people still have to eat.
Unit reefer trains have been originating on the UP from the facility at Wallula Gap much earlier than 2017. Maybe the UP purchased it in 2017, but it has been there much longer.
