The other day I noticed that on some tankcars have a bunch of different colored round stickers. I imagine they are for some kind of classification but what kind of classification?

Don't know about colored circles, but any car carrying hazardous materials (Haz Mat) will have a diamond shaped placard indicating what materials the car is carrying. In case of any incident such as a leaking valve or derailment, first responders can cross-reference the placard numbers with an Emergency Response Guide to determine how to safely handle the situation.
