Stranger in Paradise

Railroadforums.com is a free online Railroad Discussion Forum and Railroad Photo Gallery for railroaders, railfans, model railroaders and anyone else who is interested in railroads. We cover a wide variety of topics, including freight trains, passenger and commuter railroads, rail news and information, tourist railroads, railway museums and railroad history.

We were driving down U.S. 1 just north of Folkston, Georgia, last Sunday when we saw--of all things--a Florida East Coast manifest train in the hole southbound. We pulled in to the peanut gallery at the Funnel to wait for it.

One of the fans there said he saw it go northbound a couple of days earlier; another local fan said he had never seen an FEC train outside of Florida. The SD-40-2 heritage unit was just a bonus.

Interesting. I recall the FEC fought the unions and the ICC back in the 70's on the grounds that it was an intra state railroad.

I'm not sure what all went on--we were living out of state at the time--but it was apparently ugly. It left a serious railroad-police presence in its wake. Maybe some fans remember and can add to the history.

The railfan who got me started (an FEC Foamer if ever there was one) has long-since died. He told me some of it.

I just remember reading a few snippets in Trains magazine, which said there were acts of sabotage committed against the railroad.
