Photos I captured of UP, BNSF and CPKC trains at Flatonia, Texas, rail platform during Flatonia railfan day on Saturday, April 6.
It was an enjoyable time at the Tommy Shults Photo Pavilion,
A good group of railfans from all over the state participated in the railfan day, which is always on the first Saturdays of April and November.
When I arrived around 10:30 a.m., five trains had rolled by the platform. During my time there, until 10:30 p.m., I caught seven more. Oftentimes, it's very slow there. One Sunday I was there for 6 hours and didn't see a train.
Tommy Shults Photo Pavillion is on the west side of town near the original location of Tower 3. The pavilion is diagonally across the diamond from the original site of Tower 3, which is now located in a downtown park alongside the Southern Pacific Sunset Route tracks. The pavilion allows viewing of the SP Sunset Route and Dalsa Cutoff, and is covered, making it an excellent spot to watch trains in all weather. A connection track allows trains to access the onto the Cuero Sub from the Glidden Sub. The Cuero Sub runs from Flatonia to Hearne, Texas.
