New York MTA Launches Pilot With COVID-19-Killing UVC

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced an ultraviolet (UV) light pilot program proven to kill COVID-19, with the first phase set to launch on subways, buses and other New York City Transit facilities throughout the system early next week.

The MTA pilot will deploy approximately 150 dual-headed mobile devices from Denver-based startup PURO Lighting to test and evaluate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of UVC technology in a number of settings across New York City Transit including trains, buses, stations and occupational facilities, using strict protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of the employees and customers. After evaluation, the pilot’s second phase will expand to Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North.

MTA Invests $1 Million in Ultraviolet Light Machines to Clean Subways

The MTA is testing devices that emit pulses of ultraviolet light that zaps the virus, leaving subways and buses disinfected.

The MTA bought 150 of them from a Colorado-based company called Puro Lighting for $1 million dollars — each one costing more than $6,500, for a three-and-a-half-week pilot program.

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The MTA is testing an ultraviolet technology that is proven to kill COVID-19.

"It has been known for 100 years that UV light is incredibly efficient in killing bacteria," said Dr. David Brenner at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. "The UV light that's going to be used in the overnight subway cleaning is very efficient at killing the virus responsible for COVID-19."
