China Railway's most important locomotive in the last 50 years is the Class DF4 diesel electric engine. The engine was developed to replace aging diesel hydraulic engines and other engines within their system. At the time, China hadn't developed a true diesel electric engine and as a result struggled in development. The first engine took the better half of a decade to develop properly. When it was developed, it was proven to be successful and as a result more models were built. By the time production ended, 9000 or more engines had been built and some numbers of them are still operating today.

Sadly, I had no luck in catching one while there but I was able to photograph this DF4B in the Shengyang Railway Museum
