On February 4, 2018, engineer Michael Kempf and Conductor Michael Cella were operating Amtrak train 91 near Cayce, South Carolina. A CSX freight train had taken a siding and the switch wasn't realigned back to the mainline. Amtrak 91 was diverted onto the siding and struck the rear of the CSX train. 116 people were injured and Mr. Kempf and Mr. Cella were both killed. Amtrak 162 has been designated as a memorial unit for Mr. Kempf.
On July 31, 2018, we catch Amtrak 162 leading the eastbound Southwest Chief through north Albuquerque and on August 4, we catch it on Amtrak 4 passing through Bernalillo, NM with private cars Puget Sound and Sierra Hotel on the rear.
