Throttle Eight

Two AC4400s in Run 8 departing Crowsnest.
Do all diesel-electric locomotives in "Throttle Eight" do an impersonation of an erupting volcano, or is it just the ones that are long overdue for some serious mechanical maintenance? Just curious.

Curious, sometimes carbon builds up on the stack after an engine has been idling for some time, when the engineer throttles up that carbon is blown clear.

That's an interesting thought, Tyler. I also thought that maybe they tend to throw out alot of exhaust due to the fact that they don't consume much fuel while idling, but when the engine is abruptley throttled up they instantly suck fuel. The engineer on this one didn't notch up slowly. I'm guessing he had it in run 2 or so to stretch out the train, and from there it was straight to full throttle.

Black smoke indicates incomplete combustion of the fuel. It can occur across the entire operating range, but is usually worst under full power, or during the lag before the turbocharger boosts air supply to match the fuel usage such as in the early stages of acceleration. Moderate turbo lag smoke is acceptable, otherwise black smoke should be hardly visible in a correctly running engine.
