Southern Pacific Bayshore Roundhouse

Modern day view of the SP Bayshore Roundhouse. It was built in 1912 and was a part of the large Southern Pacific Bayshore Rail Yard on the southern end of San Francisco. It closed in 1985... when the entire yard was closed. In 2000 there was a fire that burned half of the stalls and the roof. Today it is only one of two buildings that are left from all of the yard facilities. There is talk...and hope... of making it into a railroad museum. In the fenced-in area, directly behind the roundhouse a group is restoring the #4 State Belt Line 0-4-0 steamer.
Does anybody know why SP didn't knock it down when it vacated the property? SP was pretty "good" about razing structures at the time. It's a real shame that it's rotting away.
