Rough Weather II

BNSF 2210 reposes in the rain of a May 24, 2008 severe thunderstorm that struck the area around Vancouver, WA. View the original Rough Weather here: http://www.dogcaught.com/2008/05/25/rough-weather/
Great shot! I like how it appears that the lightning is hitting the handrail. How long did you have to wait to get this shot?

Surprisingly I didn't have to wait long to get this photo. As the storm moved from east to west I pointed my camera at different subjects and let the lightning come to me (so to speak). I shot a couple dozen photos over about a 20 minute period where the lightning was in a good location relative to me. Click on Show EXIF Info if you want to see what I did to capture the image.

I played around doing storm photo last night and your method is the only one that works. My wife and I were both trying to get lightning shots, and after a few minutes of fruitless efforts to guess when it would flash or catch one as it happened (can you say "lightning fast reflexes"?) I said "I'm going to go use the only method that actually works". She replied "What's that?" and I replied "a tripod..."
