CSX freight passes by the old depot at Decatur, Al. If ever there was a building deserving restoration...
Grande Man,

First, I'm not a professional photographer, but I'll offer what I look for in a photo.

It is a nice composition with good color contrast. I especially liked the silhouette of the light fixtures against the sky.

Personnally, I prefer landscape view because that works better for me when viewing on my computer screen.

When I downloaded and enlarged the photo, I could not make out the number boards; that may be a function of the lighting you were dealing with.

Some items I like to see in the descriptions, for my photo database, is the railroad, engine number, engine type (although I can look it up later, it saves me a step), location, date and photographer's name.

I look forward to seeing more photos from you in the future.

Hi David. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on this photo.
Opinions such as yours help me develop as a photographer since it's sometimes tough to know how a photo will be recieved by other folks and what people zone in on in a particular shot.

It's interesting that you mentioned the light fixtures. I commented on them when we were on site and looked at them several times. They somehow seem so lost in time.

I too prefer landscape shots for computer viewing, but needed to shoot this one verticle because of the lines in the scene and the fact that I wanted to capture the overhang rafter detail.

This shot was made using my 17-40L at 20mm. While the numberboards are plain in the full resolution RAW file, because they are small detail, the JPEG compression seems to have taken it's toll on them. That's one of the drawbacks to short lenses. It's also a drawback to this type shot because sharp numberboards are pleasing to see. My objective here wasn't necessarily to have the train as the star subject though, so it's a trade that had to be made.

Thanks again,
Eric

Although photos shot in landscape orientation look better on the computer, you made the right choice with this one. This shot would not have worked in lanscape.
