A UP manifest slogs upgrade through Cougar in the shadow of Mount Shasta. I have lots of favorite places, but this place holds some special memories for me.

I agree with you Bill, I find the black nose rather annoying.
This was shot in September and I have not had a chance to go back during the longest days to attempt a lit nose shot. From this location for a lit nose you need a train just after the sun comes up just north of Mount Shasta. I am not even sure whether the nose would ever be lit, even on June 21st. You can but try.

Cougar can really be weird at times. Photobob and I were out there together in October, saw all sorts of cool clouds swirling on the mountian and decided it would be worth it to stop there for a while. Well here come some rather thick mid-level clouds out of nowhere and that was it for my color shooting for that day. It pays to have a camera loaded with B&W when out in "never-never land."
