Northbound CSX freight nears Birmingham, Ala. Up ahead is Grace's Gap in Red Mountain where the original South and North Alabama RR entered Birmingham. Graces Gap was the site where the first ore from the mountain was gathered for smelting (1840s). Later, Birmingham's first commercial red-ore mine, Eureka 1, was located nearby. It fed the historic Oxmoor Furnaces from 1863.
