One early evening in July 1989 I shot this photo looking westward out of one of the diesel shop doors looking out at the yard and GP38-2's 3011 and 3111 which were parked on the shop tracks until morning.

Most of the Nelson yard was dismantled in 1996 and the diesel shop although still standing, has seen all but one track removed. This shot was taken about 7 years before the line was was made into an internal shortline; the Kootenay Valley Railway and when trains still ran to Slocan City, BC and Grand Forks, BC. Now all that runs is one daily train to and from the smelter in Trail, BC with a set off and lift at Castlegar, BC. A large part of the land now is a lumber reload to the distant right of the photo.
