October, 1952 D&RGW locomotive 3703 exploded near Louviers, Colorado (south of Littleton, south of Denver) suspected due to the crown plate not covered with water. Wonder if the freelance photographer, who was riding in the cab, distracted the crew and they allowed the water level to get too low. The northbound train was mostly slightly descending from a high point further south at Palmer Lake, Colorado
The real reason was likely that diesel engines were far more efficient and required far less maintenence. Dieselocomotives could be connected together for more power, operated by just the one (front) engine's crew.
