Now after a year or so , we have quite the variety from Norfolk & Southern in the Old East/West Erie Line to Buffalo to the CSX Main From Buffalo to Selkirk.
Some great short lines including NYS&W From Binghamton to Syracuse. They usually have a daily train as does the Finger Lakes Railway from Geneva to Solvay. Best places? That answer depends on how adventuresome and familiar you are with the area. Also patience. Instant gratification is best accomplished on the CSX Main Line / ex NYC Main. I happen to prefer the Rochester Sub & Mohawk Sub. BUT due to time constraints usually end up rail fanning the Syracuse Terminal Subdivision. Two spots are a "sure thing", really they are the two ends of the DeWitt CSX Rail yard. OF the two ends, Minoa is the best. And there is a Pizza place right there. And an over the track cross walk. I've posted video from there several times in the "Video" section, I'll repost one here I guess for a visual reference. But ALL along that CSX main there are both historical places to visit plus good rail fan opportunities.
