Sometimes the moon and stars align perfectly. On November 19, 2017, with a heads up from Southwest Railroad Photography, we heard there were Siemens Chargers on Amtrak 4 out of California. There was some hope that they would remain on 4 and go to Chicago, but after monitoring the scanner, it was obvious they were being set out in Albuquerque. Nevertheless, we went trackside and caught the eastbound Southwest Chief. It had three P42's which is unusual and extra cars for the holidays.
Sunday is also a day that the Lamy Local picks up empties at the General Mills plant north of Albuquerque and proceeds to Rosario, NM with asphalt loads and returns with empties.
As luck would have it, the returning Rosario train, led by BNSF 1770, was held in Bernalillo to allow the northbound Railrunner to pass.
Later that afternoon, I heard AMTK 207 get track warrants to proceed from restricted limits Albuquerque to CP Hahn. I returned trackside and saw 207 leading another P42, two Siemens Chargers, and a horizon car for the crew. This train was bound for Pueblo, CO for testing.
