    Northwest Detours and track conditions

Does anyone know what BNSF and UP lines are closed in Washington and Oregon because of the conditions in the Cascades and/or flooding? When I went by Easton the other day, it looked like they're at least plowing the Stampede sub.

    Northwest Detours and track conditions

I suppose it's anyone's bet as to whether BNSF will finally replace or enlarge the Stampede Tunnel and fully signal the Stampede and Yakima Valley Subs since funding might be available with the infrastructure bill. Any guesses?

    Help with identification. Old sign/marking

You're right about the current standard whistle pattern and boards for approaching a grade crossing. Prior to things like gcor, the individual roads often had their own and distinct whistle patterns. Also, these boards may not be crossing whistle boards, but used somewhere else, such as yards or...

    Help with identification. Old sign/marking

Likely whistle boards, pre date g-cor, and tell engineer to use two long and two short whistles.

What was the purpose of this chimney looking thing in this swinging bridge photo?

Yes, the bigger thing on the left is clearly part of an old railroad bridge. The standpipe(?) like thing on the right is an open question, though. How close is it to the bridge pier? It's hard to tell from the angle of the photo. Is there an outfall pipe below it that dumps into the river?

What was the purpose of this chimney looking thing in this swinging bridge photo?

How about this: it has nothing to do with the railroad?

    Northwest Detours and track conditions

Does anyone out there have accurate information about Stampede? Are they going to finally do something about the tunnel, such as enlarge or bore a new one? Have the Yakima Valley Sub and the Stampede Sub received PTC? Does BNSF intend to resume bi-directional operations at some point? Any plans...

BNSF derailment on Yakima Valley Sub

There was a derailment yesterday near the town of Mabton on BNSF's Yakima Valley Sub. Engines and several cars on the ground on an eastbound grainer. It looks like the cause was a trucker who collided with the train. Not sure how someone could miss seeing an oncoming train at this crossing, as...

    Bridge burned, Benton Co. WA

I thought so, this trestle just didn't seem like the CWRR bridge at Gibbon. In the lower valley, UP stuck to north side of Yakima River. Really no idea where this burning trestle was, but it isn't crossing the Yakima that I know of. Maybe somewhere in the Palouse wheat country, since there's a...

    Bridge burned, Benton Co. WA

That could be expensive to repair. Since, if that's the old bridge at Gibbon, repairs will be necessary; that's the only connection to the outside world (BNSF) for Central Washington RR line to Sunnyside and Granger. And yes, they do move a lot of cars everyday. Hope Brig Temple has insurance!

BNSF track projects, WA State 2014

With what we all hope is a temporary down turn in traffic, wouldn't it be a good time for BNSF to go ahead, finally, and do something about the StampedeTunnel? Seems to me, the major things that need to happen are: a)Enlarge the existing bore to allow forseeable equipment such as double stacks...

    Northwest Detours and track conditions

Oops! Meant high line (Cascade Tunnel) and not high lie!

    Northwest Detours and track conditions

Has BNSF been able to keep the high lie open, or are they detouring through the gorge and over Stampede?

BNSF track projects, WA State 2014

Interesting. I wonder if they're going to change out jointed rail in the Bristol - Cle Elum area, or if that's already done. Still got the tunnel issue, of course...

BNSF track projects, WA State 2014

Which begs the question: any changes projected for Stampede?
