That looks like 478 to me with skeleton pole cars lifted on the headend from the Galloway pole yard on the Cranbrook sub. In fact it couldn't be a detour from the mainline because the 9703 is part of the captive 9700 - 9714 group equipped with Union Pacific distributed power equipment. These...

That makes sense, thanks for the clarification. What an odd piece of equipment

What would be the point of a car such as this?

671's stay in canada and go to the coast via the mainline, 673's go to the UP at Eastport. My guess this will be a 673 judging by the UP SD90mac's

There weren't any alarms on the headend as this wasn't the unit that was linked to locotrol, we just noticed it smoking like this looking back. I believe the unit was back on the road in short order as this would have been an easy repair for shop forces, just throw in a new turbo and away she goes.

CP 8526 suffers a blown turbo near mile 25 on the Fording River sub. You wouldn't know it but the unit is in no more than throttle 1 as the engineer pulls it up to where I am standing so I can shut it down. This is a quick shot from my cell phone camera.

The cab door being in that location would most likely indicate that this unit was set up to run long hood forward.

Coal is king in south eastern British Columbia, this is one of 5 large coal mines in the area. CP 8539 leads a 115 car train around the loop at Greenhills, the train is almost half loaded. In about 45 hours this train will be at Roberts Bank and on the way back to the Elk Valley for another load.

    Windermere sub cab hop

Work train power heading back to Cranbrook, BC with a caboose in tow southbound just north of Wasa on the Windermere subdivision. We had left our train of loaded air dumps in the back track at Torrent at mile 27.
