Westbound BNSF grain train at Cliffs, WA just west of the John Day Dam. I was parked on a turnout on Old Highway 30 east of Biggs.
Westbound BNSF grain train approaching Maryhill, WA from the same location as the previous photo.
Next stop was at Stanfield on the east end of Hinkle Yard. Caught a westbound manifest entering the yard.
DPU on the westbound manifest at Stanfield.
From Stanfield I headed to Echo on Old Highway 30.
The road between Stanfield and Echo isn't within sight of the railroad. At Echo I found a westbound already heading through town. Here is the mid-train DPU.
Next train was in Pendleton. This is just west of town at the passing siding called Rieth. A westbound grain train comes through with 3x4x2 power.
Lead unit on the west grain.
Mid-train DPUs approaching.
This CSX unit was had the lead for the mid-train DPUs.
The rear DPUs. Due to time constraints this was the last train photographed on the way to Nampa.
Two days later on the way home I had more time and followed the railroad as much as possible from Farewell Bend to Stanfield. Here is a west manifest leaving Caldwell, ID.
The manifest was passing a local with two SD40-2s for power. This is the lead unit.
One more of the east grain west of Pritchard Creek.
I drove back to Pritchard Creek to see if a could catch the grain train again. Found this Hi-Rail Truck working on the switch.
Followed the Hi-Rail to Durkee where he entered the siding. Waited awhile for the grain train but he didn't show.
Although I drove Old 30 the rest of the way to La Grande there were no more trains.
DPU on a west double stack just east of La Grande. He was stopped for maintenance being done on a grade crossing.
Lead unit on the west double stacked stopped just outside La Grande.
In the La Grande Yard from an overlook at the west end of the yard.
Mid-train DPUs on a west grain stopped near Perry west of La Grande.
Rear DPUs on a manifest that met the stopped grain train near Perry.
Another shot of the DPUs on the east manifest near Perry.
The lead unit on the stopped grain train near Perry. There appeared to be a problem with one of the units as a couple men from the truck were looking at it.
Farther up the hill was this tied down empty coal train at Motanic. No one around and the units weren't even idling.
At Kamela I caught up with the back of an autorack so I took the gravel road that parallels the tracks between Kamela and Meacham.
Here is the first time a got far enough ahead to stop.
Shortly after I took this shot the train stopped at a red signal and I continued on to Meacham.
In Meacham I found MOW equipment in the storage spur . . .
. . . and on the main the autorack was descending.
More of the equipment the autorack was waiting for.
Next stop was Pendleton again. Here a west double stack runs through the east end of Rieth.
A few minutes later an east double stack comes through Rieth.
The east double stack heading into Pendleton.
At Celilo Park I caught this west manifest heading past the park.
DPU on the west manifest at Celilo Park.
Last stop was Multnomah Falls. No trains but this classic sign on the bridge over Multnomah Creek.
Nice series. Thanks for posting.
Looks like some great scenery out there!
