Hi-Line Bottleneck

Hi-Line Bottleneck

This hot Portland to Chicago "Zee Train" putts along at the 30mph track speed between Leonia and Yakt, Montana. The unusual set of motive power includes BNSF 895, MRL 390, BNSF 941 and NS 9323, a motley assortment by most standards. The Katka Canyon section of the Kootenai River is the true bottleneck of the Hi-Line across Montana. The Canyon includes 19 miles of 30mph track, and a additional 4 miles of 40mph track. Trains get spaced about half an hour apart on this single train mainline, imposing a limit of about 50 trains a day. During peak periods in recent years, train counts have pushed that limit. It's really too bad Amtrak's Empire Builder goes through here in the middle of the night.
Last Saturday (August 9th), Empire Builder #8 was running about 2.5 hrs. late through the Canyon, so we got to see the area in complete daylight (THAT is when I don't mind 2 hr. delays :D ) . Too bad Amtk. couldn't reschedule the train so it goes through that area in daylight everyday...

BTW, nice photo...
