I would have thought all of that equipment would have been cut up and salvaged for scrap metal a long time ago.

at this time still being lot of money what you see dumped there that could be eficiently recicled

When US railroads switched from steam to diesel, the steam engines were immediately cut up and sold as scrap metal. Some were spared the scrapper's torch and placed on display in parks and museums.
