Omaha, Neb., April 01, 2011 – Union Pacific Railroad's steam team has announced that they are changing the route of the steam excursion, pulled by the historic steam locomotive No. 844, for Union Pacific's Great Excursion Adventure - You Route the Steam contest. The original winning route chosen by contest participants was the Little Rock Express. The steam excursion will now follow the route of the Baton Rouge Rambler. This decision comes on the heels of another decision to switch the steam locomotive that will pull the excursion train from Union Pacific's "Challenger" No. 3985 to No. 844. The steam route was originally supposed to start in Cheyenne, Wyo., and head east to St. Louis, Mo., and then turn south to head to Little Rock, Ark. The new route will start in Cheyenne, Wyo. and head south to Denver, Col. From there it will head east to Salina, Kan., and then turn south to Fort Worth, Tex. The train will then proceed east to Dallas and afterward continue east to Baton Rouge, La. Union Pacific Railroad's steam team has established the new overnight and display locations for the Baton Rouge Rambler. More than 175,000 votes were cast for four different routes, with the Little Rock Express originally defeating the Tuscola Turn, Baton Rouge Rambler and Boise Express. However, Union Pacific steam officials have determined the Baton Rouge Rambler route to be better for the interests of the railroad, the steam crew, and the public.

No. 844 will depart Cheyenne, its home base, May 27 making overnight stops in:

Denver, Col.;
Salina, Kan.;
El Reno, Ok.;
Fort Worth, Dallas, and Longview, Tex.; and
Baton Rouge, La.
The locomotive also will be on public display for at least one day in the following cities before arriving back in Cheyenne in late June:

Denver, Col.;
Fort Worth, Dallas, and Longview, Tex.; and
Baton Rouge, La.

The Baton Rouge Rambler portion of the tour begins June 1 with the locomotive arriving in Dallas, Tex., and concludes June 7, after a display day in Baton Rouge.

A detailed Baton Rouge Rambler Tour schedule that will include the dates, times and location the tour will be in various cities, along with cities where the Baton Rouge Rambler will make whistle stops, will be available April 27.

Contest participants who voted for the Baton Rouge Rambler will be entered into a drawing for the opportunity to ride a brief segment of the tour. As stated in the contest rules, no tickets will be sold and general public train rides will not be available as part of the tour.
