Had the chance to watch the tamper working a section of line yesterday....followed behind by the ballast re-grader. Pretty impressive machines that can do this..... This took place on the South edge of Goshen,IN...just East of the Elkhart yard.
Today watched them lift and screen ballast before returning it back on the side of the rails... Same section of track....big machine that actually was making good time as it moved along....
Ballast regulator....ok. Now I know the right term for it...Besides all the rail traffic I get to see I also get to see plenty of maintenance equipment doing it's thing...
There are different types of Tampers but the most commom is the mark 4 .The new Dynna cats are nice but it takes about 6 months to learn how to run them and they chew up to much rock

That was probably an undercutter. A ballast regulator just brooms and plows the ballast, it doesn't lift and screen the ballast.

I suppose it depends on your railroad or area where you work. I would say the most common is the 6700.
