Steamtown Ice Train 2011

The Tobyhanna Ice Harvest steam train excursion returned to Steamtown in 2011 and plenty of hardy souls were out to ride and chase as CN #3254 made the run from Scranton to Tobyhanna in the Pocono Mountains.

Many thanks to the crew, the Park Rangers and the volunteers at Steamtown and to the good folks of Coolbaugh Township who make this event possible.

1) The big Mikado roars past a snow-covered jalopy just after exiting the Nay Aug tunnel in East Scranton.
2) The excursion train arrives in frosty Tobyhanna.
3) A light engine move at Toby.
4) The locomotive crew gets a moment to relax after bringing their train to the Tobyhanna depot. (This image inspired by the great David Plowden.)

I spent most of the Friday before the excursion run in the Steamtown roundhouse.

Many of these photos were inspired by images created by David Plowden. Plowden is an American master whose wonderful photos tell the industrial history of America in the mid-20th Century.

4) Out of the roundhouse and onto the turntable, this image is from early Saturday morning as the crew brings the engine out to get ready for the run to Toby.

I know I made some comments on flickr already, but I will add here that this is simply an awesome set. I am quite in awe of these images. These should definitely be in a book or printed and framed. I know I would definitely purchase some.
