Hello:
I have a locomotive bell that has been in my family for three generations. My grandfather had it mounted on a pipe next to his gas and grocery store so my grandmother could call him in from the truck garden out back and in to dinner. My father hauled it around in one basement or another for 50 years. My needs are much quieter, so the bell needs to go.
My Grandparents' store was located across the highway from the mainline of the Great Northern approx. 30 miles east of Everett, WA (westernmost GN terminus). The bell seems too large and the harp too specialized to fit one of the local logging locomotives. My guess is that it's from GN, but have no means by which to confirm (any help would be appreciated).
The diameter at the bottom of this brass (or bronze) bell is 14.5 inches and total bell height is 12". Total height of harp is 23.5".
Markings are limited to casting numbers on parts of the harp frame:
"12-40" located on top of the pintle nut.
"12-27" located on top of the harp bow.
"6857" followed by an undistinguishable logo located on the shaft of the cast-iron (or steel) clapper.
I have not removed the pintle nut to see if there are any stampings underneath (Baldwin numbers, or other).
I am asking $1,200 for the bell and harp. Shipping is likely difficult because of weight, but I'm willing to assist the buyer with logistics. I will be happy to deliver to OR, WA, ID or western MT for the cost of fuel in my diesel pickup. Payment by PayPal ia available.
See thread in For Sale forum for pictures. Thank-you for your interest.
