Ok, you should arrive in Wishram at... 11:30? And leave at... 3? So what do you do for the 2.5 hours after you eat the BBQ? Only so much to do in Wishram, WA!

Um, good question ... I don't know whether the 5:30 return time is just conservative, or whether Amtrak wants the Builder out of the depot before we get back. I have asked Those Who Know Such Things and will post back here if I get an answer.

We might be renting wind surfing gear out of the concessions car .... :p

or not.

Umm, let's see...how about do some railfanning, since you're right on the BNSF mainline? ;) Not that we ride these special steam excursion trains because we're railfans or anything like that...:D (Sorry, couldn't resist)

It'll also be part of the 4th of July weekend, so might be light on freight traffic. Doesn't BNSF also have a big maintenance blitz scheduled this summer for the Fallbridge Sub as well?

Can check out those mighty GP38-2s that are assigned to the Wishram switcher.

I spent that much time there in 2005 during the NRHS excursion. Some pals of mine from Florida came out and we chased the trip out to the town. You can kill 2+ hours there pretty easily. GN 4-8-2 # 2507 is on display there under good cover (which makes photography really tough): http://www.flickr.com/photos/mwahlsten/4694271827/ I also recall a couple of stores you can walk to that would provide some distraction. And don’t forget that during that time, they’ll be turning the train on the wye there. You’d probably want to watch that happen.
