Hello everyone, my name is Heber Richins. I am 28 years old with autism spectrum disorder, and I am a huge railroad enthusiast. I'm currently attending Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher Arizona, my future plans after college is to work as a Railroad Conductor (preferably for a smaller Railroad).

So I'd like to share with you the history and story of this S-10 0-6-0 Switcher #1221.

1221 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1913 as a batch of 12 Switchers, she was one of the modern steam switchers on the railroad equipment with super heating piston valves.

1221 served in various Railyards, but not long after coming into Service, 1221 was assigned to the San Jose California Depots at both Cahill and Market street sites.

Overtime 1221's tender was changed twice for better performance, capacity for fuel, and for aesthetics.

In 1956 Southern Pacific was replacing their Steam power for Diesel and so like many others 1221 was retired and placed in storage after 43 years of service.

5 years later, the City of Deming New Mexico was looking for a locomotive to represent them as a Railroad Community for static display, after being rejected by the SP office in El Paso, they went to the SP office in California. The office there said yes and 1221 was pulled out of storage and was repainted then sent on her way to Deming New Mexico.

Thanks the City of Deming, 1221 over the years has been beautifully Preserved and displayed just like she is today.

So no that you understand the history behind this beautiful locomotive, let me tell you the project I'm going to work on.
Starting hopefully in the next few months I will be building a trackless train out of a Craftsman 4000 riding garden/lawn mower, and the locomotive I've chosen is 1221.

I want to replicate her exterior as close as I can, I plan on giving her the paint scheme she had when in service and will use an actual small whistle and bell instead of a cheap soundboard. I will replicate her current tender and build a couple Southern Pacific pullmans for her to pull and a caboose as well, to me no train is complete without a caboose. I'm willing start with building the locomotive and tender and then later on I'll build the Pullmans and caboose.

This is the closest I can do to reviving 1221. as much as I wish I could free the real 1221, but there's no place to easily run her and store her and that would cost millions.

So this project is the alternative. This way I can not only have a fun ride, but take it to car shows, even possibly model railroad or train events.

One thing I want to do after building 1221 is take her to Deming NM and do a Photoshoot with her next to the Original 1221.
