My job had me heading for the Edmonds to Kingston ferry this morning. On the way there I heard the news mention that a Sounder train hit a semi-truck right in front of the Edmonds ferry dock.
Apparently, the semi pulled onto the tracks despite the crossing signals warning of an approaching train. He started to reverse off the tracks. Sounder 901 (train #1703) was slowing to make a stop at the Edmonds station just a short distance from the crossing. It couldn't stop before clipping the front of the semi. No injuries to driver, train crew or passengers. Minor damage to the engine, a bit more to the semi-truck.

My first thought was "is this blocking access to the ferry which will cause me to have to drive around the Sound?". Fortunately, the report was that it wasn't affecting ferry traffic. Good.
Being a railfan, my second thought was - "Sweet! I'll get some photos of the carnage to post online!"
I arrived 30 minutes early for the boat and took a few minutes to grab a couple of shots.
Photos:
1 - Police are inspecting the truck. In the background are a gaggle of onlookers taking photos/video, reporters, etc.
2 - Front of the truck. Fairly minor damage. As they say "it'll buff out".
3 - Where the train is stopped is the Edmonds station. Since the crossing is right next to the station, the train obviously wasn't going very fast.
4 - 901 has been detached from the cars. I assume the engine will be towed away separate from the cars. Not sure why else they would separate the cars.
