Those are actually pigeons. The long exposure blurs them as they fly
This shot was .2 (1/5) of a second at f22.

I had a feeling it must be something moving through the air....plastic shopping bags blowing in the wind was first thought!

On Tennent Avenue in Pinole CA, the BNSF bridge over the street, still painted Santa Fe, has some very cool murals under it.

I like the murals. I hope they don't get covered by graffiti.

Are the lines through Niles Canyon and Altamont Pass still open? I would love to see photos of trains on them if they are still in use.

The murals have been there for years unmolested thank goodness. As for Niles and Altamont, yes the old WP line, now UP is still in use. It only sees a bit of freight traffic, but the ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) commuters trains use it every day. I would love to get down that way and take some pictures, but it would have to be a weekday, which means I need to get a free day off sometime. Unfortunately, right now I am working six days a week :-( Niles also has a tourist railroad on the old SP mainline where they run a lot of great old equipment. I need to get there on a Saturday when they are running their old WP F units. I would love to get some shots of those as well as the many other classics they run.

Pinole never has had much of a tagging problem (not too many gangbangers or wanna-be types there, or at least there weren't when I was still in the Bay Area way back when), plus the taggers usually leave murals alone. It could use a careful cleaning and touch-up, though...

I was kind of scouting out a new spot when these two running light came under then away from me. This is kind of a tricky location because it is bridge over the tracks, there is some serious fencing to shoot through.

Luckily I didn't have to wait long for a train to come at me. This westbound must have been waiting at the siding just at the head of Franklin Canyon. This is right along San Pablo Avenue in Hercules. (The fence does give a cool star effect to the headlights)

I waited and waited for this baretable to show up, only to give up. So of course after I am in the car and leaving, it shows itself. This not so great shot was from the drivers window of my van in the parking lot of Pinole Shores Regional Park.

Awesome tracking shot of the P42. You get the sense that he's really hauling through there. I love following your thread with so many amazing shots. A real treat.

Thanks! To be honest I get kind of bored shooting Amtrak, so I try to do some different things with them when I see them coming. Also I try not to get too repetitive with posting kind of the same stuff all the time.

Speaking of which, here is a slow shutter speed shot of an endless container train going by...

The grass is starting to turn brown for the summer in Franklin Canyon, but I did get some nice shots while it lasted. Don't see a lot of tank trains in this area on the BNSF
