Happy New Year everyone. I have been busy with holiday activities for the past few weeks, so I apologize for not thanking everyone for the nice comments about my last post sooner, but, Thanks! :D

Here are a few that I haven't had a chance to post yet.

I've been out chasing birds more than trains lately, but there will be more to come as it stays lighter longer.

Fortunately I can do both at the marina, the marsh and Mile Posts 17 & 18. :D

Please tell the crews of the Richmond Pacific that their shiny diesel and caboose look very nice. I enjoy your photos, as it is that time of year up here in the Pacific North Wet when sunshine can be rare.

Thanks Bill. Yes I wish I could get more "two for the price of one" shooting, but I have better luck going to the various sanctuaries around if here I want good odds of getting raptors.

We have the opposite problem with weather down here this year. It hasn't rained in months. That's good for getting out, but not good for anything else.

On the subject of birds, maybe you can tell me what this guy is, which did fly over me in Franklin Canyon a while back.

And to keep the thread focused on trains, here is one I forgot to post from before Christmas. Northbound and Southbound Capital Corridors pulling out of Jack London Station.

This was something new. I have never seen a UP unit in Franklin Canyon, but here are not one, but two, at the head of an auto train heading west into Richmond.

All these hills should be bright green by this time of year. We are finally expecting our first big storm later this week.

I went out last Monday since I had the day off, but man was it cold (by Northern California standards that is:rolleyes:) Anyway, I got a few.

We actually got some rain for a few days here, but it has been dry for over a week. While we need the rain, it does make shooting photos a bit more challenging.

It was really pouring when the UPS train made its appearance

Better weather last week, and got some cool shots. I've spent more time birding lately, although I have been lucky to see both on some outings. The light is getting better in Franklin Canyon, so I have been seeing more BNSF action lately.

This unit looks like it got a nose job recently...notice too the blue bonnet geeps at the back of the consist.

I forgot to add this from the set the other day. It was kind of a strange sight, the Coast Starlight was very late and missing a baggage car, but had some motive power help from you folks up in the PNW...

One of my bird photographing buddies got a 7D. He is amazed at how many birds in flight shots he can now get which are in focus compared to his 40D.

Is there an Amtrak maintenance facility in California where the Cascade unit might be heading?

SP&SFan

MP 72 - BNSF Spokane Sub.
Amtrak maintainence base..

Bill and others,

I believe the Cascade units have LA as the maintainence facility..

Well that could explain it. There is a pretty large Amtrak facility in the Oakland yard, but I think that is mostly for the CDXT units.

Yes it is night and day between the two focus wise. The caveat being the 7D files require way more post processing than either my 40D or 5D due to the very high pixel density. There is significant noise on any blue sky showing. I still love the camera though.

It's still a bit dark at 5pm here, but it's getting better every day. Here a Sunday afternoon westbound container train rolls through the canyon.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I just picked up a new camera (again) and hope to be out soon, although I have to work 6 days a week for the forseeable future, Grrr.
