RJ Corman's ALCAN aluminum ingot train (empty) rolled timetable south on the former L&N "Old Road" today as the Bluegrass got yet another coating of snow.

1) RJC #3944 powers through historic Midway, KY. [Eagle-eyed railfans and Corman watchers will note the freshly painted, bright red ballast cars behind the power.]
2) The fat flakes are flying past this former L&N bay window caboose in Midway, which now must wear the Corman corporate colors.
3) Entering Rupp Yard in Lexington, the Corman train rolls along Manchester Street (aka Old Frankfort Pike).
4) After a brief stop at the yard office, the ALCAN train continues its journey to Berea, KY; passing Blue Grass Grain on Henry Street in Lexington.

Thanks, Allan! Most folks here in Central KY are fed up with all the snow we've had so far this winter (over 25 inches...normal for early Feb. is 10 inches); but as long as it keeps coming, I'll keep getting out with my camera.

Very cool pics bogray (in more ways than 1! :D ). What do they use to haul aluminum billets? The steel billets we get for our steel mill comes in gondolas and (what I call) NS's "mini-centerbeams....NS 113000-NS 113499.

Thanks for the comments, Midsouth...and yes...it was a damp, cold snow!

RJ Corman uses bulkhead flats to haul the aluminum ingots (made from recycled aluminum cans) from the recycling center in Berea, KY to Logan Aluminum in South Union, KY.

They originally used high-bulkhead cars, but over the years the bulkheads on most of the cars have been cut shorter. When the train was all (or mostly) the high-bulkhead cars, it moved a LOT of air and felt like a tornado when it blew past you. That had to be causing a lot of drag from the wind-resistance which no doubt cost more in fuel. I would have to think that's one reason that most of the cars have had the bulkheads shortened.

This photo (1) from 2009 shows both types of cars...this loaded train was headed timetable north just out of West Frankfort. The cropped-in view (2) shows the old high-bulkheads next to the cut down versions.
