Tunnel repair

The state capital budget for this new biennium includes $1.8 million for tunnel repair. I'm not sure which tunnels will get repaired.

snoqualmie tunnel

As of October, 2012, the Snoq. tunnel is the only one of the cascade tunnels officially open.

I've now ridden and walked through the tunnel - and it quite an experience. It's 2.5 miles long with no internal lighting. When you enter heading west, the other end is a pinprick of very bright light - heading east it's green shaded from all the trees surrounding the short curve that leads into the tunnel.

It's wet - and the darkness is all consuming. there are electrical boxes every 10th of a mile or so, and some of the old cabling is still bolted to the tunnel wall. There is some grafitti.

It's a trip. Every rail fan should walk it once....just bring a really good flashlight.

Went through once a long time ago coming back from my first trip to Montana. I didn't have a flashlight just a lantern, so I went without. I started by riding my bike, but I couldn't see anything but the other end of the tunnel and about 3 feet in front of me. I would hear water dripping and suddenly I was all wet. After two or three times of this, my nerves were shot and I started walking. It took a long time, but it was very cool to see all the old equipment. At that time most of it was still there. I road the grade down past the first few trestles then went back. I would recommend taking a bike and starting early.
