Daily lumber train leaves town about 6:45 - 7 AM for Mill 5, returns around 8:30 - 9 AM. Log train leaves SHelton for Mill 5 mid-day and returns 1½ hrs later. a late train makes a trip about 4 PM most days. Some operations on the weekends, too.
May I add that the most reliable of these trains is the morning train out to the sort and back. I was there just a couple of months ago and got them running east from Dayton, which was a great chase. Once they got to Shelton and put the train away, some local switching was done by a single unit around the mill and by noon the entire operation was done for the day.
A friend had a similar experience not long ago, as well. I am not by any means disuading anyone from visiting, but rather cautioning you to not sleep in and bank on the afternoon trains. Treat that morning run in from Dayton like it may be the only train of the day you shoot. It may well be. It was just dumb luck that I did so, and I'm glad I did.
