I found this NS video on You Tube. My fellow moderators can feel free to transfer it to another forum as appropriate.

Background: Saluda Grade is one of the steepest class 1 mainline railroad grades in the US, with sections as steep as 5.4%.

Items of interest on the video: Operation of a train down the grade is considered to be difficult enough that a Road Foreman of Engines is brought in to pilot a train downhill.

The summit ("crest") of the grade is Main Street. How often do you see that?

This video is over 40 years old. Assuming Saluda Grade is still in use, I wonder if operations have changed with the elimination of the caboose and advances in technology.

Update on Saluda Grade, which has been mothballed since 2001. If you don't want to watch the entire video, which is nearly an hour long, skip to the 30' mark to see N&W 4-8-4 #611 haul five passenger cars over the grade with no diesel helpers. Things get very dramatic when the engine stalls out in town just short of the summit.
