The Roanoke Chapter of the NRHS is pleased to present two fall foliage excursions, departing from downtown Roanoke’s historic ex-N&W station (now home to the O.Winston Link Museum) on Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6th.
Retracing the historic Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, Saturday’s trip will run from Roanoke, through Radford, to Abingdon, VA, operating over portions of NS’s Virginia division. Upon arrival into Abingdon, riders will have the opportunity to tour the town and attractions; however, for the railfan, the equipment will continue to Bristol, VA/TN, although passengers must remain on the train in Bristol. On Sunday, the train will traverse the ex-N&W main from Roanoke, along the scenic New River Valley, to the heart of Appalachian Coal Country: Bluefield, WV. Upon arrival into Bluefield, guests will be able to visit several vendors and businesses in this once bustling community while the train is prepared to return to Roanoke. The train will operate on the Christiansburg District in both directions.
Both trips offer scenic beauty and views only seen from the train over NS’s two heavily used lines.
Equipment will be Amtrak supplied locomotives and coaches; several historic private cars will also be on the train. Please visit www.roanokenrhs.org for more information concerning these trips including ticket pricing and seating options.
