Im thinking about making a job change. Been working in auto racing for 11 years and the travel is getting to me. job is fun but the travel sucks. I plan to start a family soon and spending weeks away from home simply wont work. I see that railroads are looking for lots of people lately and would like to know what it is like as far as travel and what jobs to look for if I wanted to stay local or home every night. I come from a construction background and know what its like to work outdoors with heavy equipment. I know alot about trains but little how the railroad expects its workers to live/travel.

any advice is great

Thanks

There really isnt a job unless you work for a shortline that you will be home every night.

If you work on a Class 1 as a conductor they do alot of travel over the road, you can be on a set job (yard job, local) that wont travel as much.

The railroad is the wrong career to get into if you want family time. You'll work on call 24/7/365 and if you don't have enough seniority to stay in your home terminal you can be forced out of town to a different terminal for months at a time.
