So basically, I'm currently a 20 year old electrical apprentice working in the trades. I haev always thought about and wanted to become a train engineer, just never really acted on it. I have recently gotten some information that my father knows someone fairly high up in VIA. I have been informed that to become a conductor for via they now require you to have the diploma from SAIT university (recently changed from having their own training). I was just hoping I could get some input from anyone that knows about working for VIA. How is it in general, pay, schedule, etc. I'm just scared to make the commitment and end up not liking the lifestyle but at the same time I really want to do it.

How does becoming an engineer work withing VIA?

Any information about the job in general and via more specifically would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

While I stand to be corrected, I believe running trades on VIA trains are provided by the host railway (CP or CN).

uhmmmmmm sorry I'm not sure you realized what I was asking, it actually wasn't anything to do with trades! I was just stating what my current job is, I'm interested in becoming a conductor/ engineer for via :)

"Running trades" are the operations crews ... conductors, enginemen, brakemen, etc, as opposed to "shop trades" who are the welders, diesel mechanics, etc ;)
